|KIPO and WIPO to Jointly Hold ADR Seminar in Seoul |
On March 11th, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center, will hold the KIPO-WIPO Joint ADR Seminar in Seoul in order to enhance Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the intellectual property (IP) field, as well as to promote usage thereof.
Recent global increases in IP disputes have resulted in a growing demand for such expedited, cost-effective arbitration and meditation alternatives as ADR.
ADR uses arbitration, mediation, and conciliation to help settle IP disputes without resorting to court proceedings. Effective use of ADR requires a certain level of expertise and predictability in regard to legal procedures, as well as the implementation of a globally harmonized IP system.
The ADR seminar will introduce KIPO’s ADR system and procedures, and it will reference ADR-related cases experienced by various organizations, both foreign (such as the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center) and domestic (such as the Korea Creative Content Agency).
Additionally, author Joyce Tan will take time at the seminar to introduce her “WIPO Guide on Alternative Dispute Resolution Options for Intellectual Property Offices and Courts,” which was published thanks to financial support from the Korea Funds-in-Trust. The guide is available online at KIPO’s official website (http://www.kipo.go.kr), as well as WIPO’s official website (http://www.wipo.int).
Seong-Joon Park, Director General of KIPO’s Intellectual Property Protection and International Cooperation Bureau stated that he hoped the seminar will provide opportunities for boosting ADR in the IP field. He also stated that KIPO will assist with holding overseas ADR seminars in order to promote ADR usage, as well as raise IP awareness in less developed countries.
